Background of the Study
Social housing policies are integral to mitigating urban poverty by providing affordable living solutions and enhancing community well-being (Olayinka, 2023). In Ado-Ekiti, rapid urbanization has increased the demand for low-cost housing, making poverty alleviation a critical policy focus (Adediran, 2024). Recent literature emphasizes that effective social housing can reduce homelessness, improve health outcomes, and promote economic stability (Ibrahim, 2023). However, challenges such as bureaucratic inefficiencies, inadequate funding, and poor implementation hinder these efforts (Chukwu, 2025). This study appraises current social housing policies in Ado-Ekiti, assessing their role in alleviating urban poverty and identifying gaps in policy and practice (Okafor, 2023). The research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations to optimize social housing programs and enhance their impact on urban poverty reduction.

Statement of the Problem
Ado-Ekiti faces significant urban poverty challenges despite the existence of social housing policies (Adebola, 2023). Ineffective implementation, funding shortfalls, and bureaucratic delays have limited the reach and impact of these policies (Ogunleye, 2024). As a result, many low-income residents remain unable to access affordable housing, perpetuating cycles of poverty and social exclusion (Ifeanyi, 2023). This study seeks to investigate the shortcomings of current social housing initiatives and propose improvements to better alleviate urban poverty.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of current social housing policies.
  • To assess the impact of social housing on urban poverty alleviation.
  • To recommend strategies for improving housing policy implementation.

Research Questions:

  • How effective are current social housing policies in Ado-Ekiti?
  • What impact do these policies have on reducing urban poverty?
  • What policy reforms can enhance the effectiveness of social housing programs?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Social housing policies significantly reduce urban poverty.
  • H2: Inefficient policy implementation limits the benefits of social housing.
  • H3: Enhanced funding and governance improve policy outcomes.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the efficacy of social housing policies in reducing urban poverty. The insights gained will assist policymakers and urban planners in designing more effective housing strategies that improve living standards and foster socio-economic development (Olu, 2024; Akinola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is confined to evaluating social housing policies and their impact on urban poverty alleviation in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State. It does not address other poverty alleviation strategies.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Social Housing Policies: Government initiatives aimed at providing affordable housing for low-income populations.
  • Urban Poverty: The state of economic deprivation in urban areas.
  • Policy Implementation: The process of executing and managing government policies.
